If you live in Ontario or in the Northeastern U.S. then you probably remember the Great Blackout in August of 2003.
The city of Toronto was paralyzed and my usual 30 minute subway ride home turned into a four hour walk in 30+ degree heat. I had the good fortune to have the company of a friend and co-worker during part of the journey, but she eventually succumbed to fatigue and hopped on a severly overcrowded bus. I couldn´t bear the prospect of being jammed in with hundreds of other sweating people (my own sweat was bad enough) so I made the last part of my journey alone.
I always like to compose music during long trips and coming up with this little tune helped to keep my mind off the oppressive heat and my aching paws. The opening melody expresses my fatigue mixed with determination to finish the last stretch on foot. The bridge melody is more hopefull as I start to see the familiar sights of my own neighborhood, and the reprise of the openning melody, this time with more energy, represents the last leg of my journey as the welcoming sight of my home draws near.
